The abdominal muscles are a group of muscles which run from the ribs to the pelvis. The deep abdominal muscles form part of your 'core' muscles and help keep your body stable and balanced, and protects your spine.
Rectus Abdominis |
This is slung between the ribs and the pubic bone at the front, called ‘the six pack’.
External Oblique Muscles |
These muscles are on each side of the rectus abdominis. The external oblique muscles allow the trunk to twist.
Transversus Abdominis |
This is the deepest muscle layer. Its main role is to stabilise the trunk.
Internal Oblique Muscles |
These muscles flank the rectus abdominis. They operate in the opposite way to the external oblique muscles.
